Measuring pain possible with new devices

Estimating pain for a doctor or nurse is very difficult. After all, everyone has a different pain threshold and pain is influenced by many parameters. That is why the pain index has been a well-known instrument for a long time. A patient uses this to score his pain sensation on a scale from zero to ten. Zero means no pain, while ten represents the worst pain there is. However, such pain measurement is highly subjective and that is why two revolutionary new pain measurement devices, "Medasense" and "Conditioned Pain Modulator", have existed since July 2014. The Medasense objectively maps pain, making the subjective pain score partly a thing of the past. The pain measurement of chronic pain patients is done with the Conditioned Pain Modulator.

Breakthrough in Pain Research

This device represents a major breakthrough in pain research. Over time, the general reference values are known from many measurements. Interpreting these figures still requires proper training, but these measurements may be part of a standard diagnostic assessment and treatment for the future. In Belgium, quantitative sensory research in clinical conditions is only carried out at the UZA. Since March 2014, more than a hundred patients have already been measured with the new devices. It is the intention of the manufacturers that in the future these measuring devices will be used everywhere in hospitals.
