Pregnant and butter
It is often recommended for pregnant women to spread bread with margarine or butter to get enough vitamin D. It is almost never mentioned that butter can also pose a danger to the unborn baby during pregnancy. Some artisan farm butter is made with raw milk. Because the butter has not been heated during preparation, there is a risk of contamination with Listeria. Contamination with Listeria can have serious consequences during pregnancy.
Butter during pregnancy
Despite the Listeria danger, butter does not have to be avoided during pregnancy. It is wise to only eat butter made from pasteurized milk, preference is also given to industrial butter. Margarine is in many cases a good and safe alternative. Both are a good source of fat-soluble vitamins that a pregnant woman desperately needs.
