Pregnant and chorizo
-
Chorizo is a popular spicy sausage variety that is appreciated by many. For pregnant women it is often unclear whether it is safe to eat chorizo during pregnancy. This lack of clarity is due to the fact that chorizo is a raw sausage type, so there is a chance that there may be Toxoplasma or Listeria in the sausage. In addition, chorizo contains a lot of salt and nitrite, which should not be eaten too much during pregnancy.
Chorizo during pregnancy
-
Dried or smoked chorizo, due to its dry character and high salt content, does not pose a risk of contamination to Toxoplasma or Listeria. As a result, eating dried or smoked chorizo does not pose any immediate danger to pregnant women. However, it is wise to eat chorizo in moderation, because of the high salt content, the added nitrite and the high content of saturated fats. Fresh chorizo is less dry and salty and can therefore be contaminated with Toxoplasma and Listeria. Fresh chorizo is therefore not suitable for pregnant women.
