Boerenkaas is a Dutch hard cheese made on the farm from raw milk. Because the cheese is a guaranteed traditional specialty, farm cheese can only be called that if the cheese is made from raw milk, mainly from our own dairy cattle. Because raw milk may contain Listeria, it is warned that pregnant women should avoid products made from raw milk. An exception applies to farmer's cheese, as with a number of other cheeses. Because of certain properties of the cheese, Listeria cannot grow and it is safe to eat during pregnancy.
