Pregnant and mussels

  1. It is often thought that eating mussels during pregnancy can be dangerous. In most cases this is not true and pregnant women can simply enjoy a serving of mussels from time to time. They contain valuable nutrients that you badly need when you are pregnant. However, there are a number of cases where a pregnant woman should be careful about eating mussels. Mussels from polluted waters, for example, are dangerous and raw mussels can contain dangerous viruses and bacteria. Eating mussels is also less sensible for people with a shellfish allergy.

Mussels during pregnancy

  1. The greatest danger for pregnant women when eating mussels is the risk of Listeria infection. All other dangers, such as the possible contamination of viruses or other bacteria, have little or no effect on the unborn child because they cannot cross the placenta. However, pregnant women are often more prone to contracting an infection, so it is wise to pay close attention. Eating raw mussels during pregnancy is therefore not recommended. Well-heated mussels, on the other hand, are safe and even healthy to eat during pregnancy. However, one must take into account the fact that mussels are often eaten with chips. Although the mussel is healthy, chips are often a less healthy side dish for pregnant women.
