Pregnant and rhubarb
-
Rhubarb is a delicious vegetable that is often eaten for dessert in the summer. About ten percent of women have a greater need for acidic foods such as rhubarb during pregnancy. But these women should not eat too much rhubarb, as large amounts can lead to a calcium deficiency. This is because rhubarb is high in oxalic acid, and oxalic acid binds calcium so that it is not absorbed by the body, but excreted by the kidneys.
Rhubarb during pregnancy
-
The high content of oxalic acid in rhubarb is the reason that it is sometimes advised not to eat too much rhubarb during pregnancy. An occasional serving of rhubarb obviously does not hurt at all, but some women during pregnancy have to deal with a certain preference for acidic products that makes them like to eat rhubarb. In this case it is better to choose something else, because too high a concentration of oxalic acid can cause damage. As with so many other products also applies to rhubarb, enjoy in moderation. If you eat a maximum of two portions of about 150 grams of rhubarb per week, there is nothing wrong.
