It is often said that spinach makes you strong. It is therefore a healthy vegetable full of vitamins and minerals. Yet there are also disadvantages to spinach, which pregnant women should be aware of. Spinach, for example, contains a lot of oxalic acid and nitrate. Fresh spinach can also be infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which can cause birth defects or miscarriage during pregnancy. How harmful are these substances and is it safe to eat spinach during pregnancy?
Spinach during pregnancy
Spinach is a healthy vegetable and it is certainly advisable to eat enough vegetables during pregnancy. Do take the risks into account and proceed hygienically. It is best to eat fresh spinach on the day of purchase. Always wash fresh spinach well, even if it has already been washed before purchase. Especially if the spinach is eaten raw, washing well is extra important. Keep prepared spinach in the refrigerator for a maximum of 2 days and preferably let it cool in the refrigerator. Finally, it is wise to limit the number of servings of spinach during pregnancy to twice a week.
