Sugar makes you fat?

  1. Sugar in itself does not make you fat. Eating or drinking too much sugar can contribute to the development of obesity, but if you don't use it too much and too often, you really won't get fat right away. It's about balance. Half of all sugar we consume in the Netherlands comes from extras such as sweets, biscuits, pastries and soft drinks. And your body doesn't need it. So there is a lot to be gained there.

Research

  1. Much research has been done into the relationship between overweight and (liquid) sugar. An example of this, which clearly shows the relationship, is a large study among Dutch children. This showed that children who drank a can of sugary soft drinks every day for a year and a half gained more weight than children who were given a sugar-free drink.
