Peel the pears with a peeler and let the stalks sit.

Put them upright in a pan and add all the ingredients except the plums.

Length with water until the pears are under the stalks.

Bring to the boil, place the lid on the pan and let the pears stew to low setting in about 4 hours.

Put the prunes in the cooking liquid for the last half an hour.

Allow the pears to cool in the cooking liquid and serve them lukewarm or let them cool further in the refrigerator.
