Soak the gelatine in cold water for a few minutes. Dissolve the squeezed gelatine in a dash of hot water or orange juice.

Stir the dissolved gelatine through the vanilla custard. Beat the whipped cream with the sugar and spatula through the custard.

Brush the cake base with a thin layer of jam. Spread the vanilla cream over it and smooth the top.

Place the strawberries with the tip facing up in a uniform pattern on the cake (large strawberries are halved).

Sprinkle them generously with icing sugar shortly before serving, or garnish the cake with whipped cream from the aerosol can.
