Bile attack (often due to gallstones): symptoms and treatment

  1. A bile attack is often caused by the presence of gallstones. Less common causes of a bile attack are tumors of the bile ducts or gallbladder, or certain diseases. As a result of a blockage of the flow of bile, bile accumulates in the gallbladder, causing an increase in pressure that can sometimes lead to a perforation. Symptoms of a bile attack include pain in the upper right side of the abdomen or pain in the middle of the abdomen. The pain can be sharp or cramps. The pain usually starts suddenly. The pain often spreads to the back or the area under your right shoulder blade. A complication of gallstones is inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis). Symptoms that can accompany acute gallbladder inflammation include fever, nausea, vomiting, clay-colored stools, and jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin).

Other symptoms of a bile attack include nausea, vomiting, sweating, fever, and chills. Your urine can be dark yellow or even brown, and the stool can be clay-colored. These symptoms indicate that gallstones

Gallbladder removal

  1. The gastroenterologist can advise you to have your gallbladder removed, especially if you have recurring complaints. People can live very well without a gallbladder. No more bile is then stored in the gallbladder. All bile then goes directly to the small intestine. The surgical removal of the gallbladder is called "cholecystectomy."
