Black stools: causes sticky and tarry poo
-
Black stools occur in both children and adults. There are many possible causes that your stool or poop will have a black color. A black, sticky, tarry stool, with a distinctive odor, is called melena and is caused by bleeding in the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. However, eating certain foods or taking iron supplements can also cause black stools. For example, if you consume a large amount of licorice in one go, this can also give black poo. Bleeding high in the digestive tract, for example in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine, produces black tar-like stools. Blood in the stomach, for example due to a stomach bleeding, turns black when exposed to stomach acid and enzymes. A one-time, severe bleeding can cause black poo for up to a week. So persistent black stools does not necessarily mean persistent bleeding.

Treatment of black stools
-
If black stools are caused by acute gastrointestinal bleeding, then therapeutic measures are urgently required. Bleeding in the stomach, esophagus or duodenum can often be treated during a gastroscopy with the help of special procedures (so-called endoscopic hemostasis). If this treatment does not work, surgery may be necessary. Once the bleeding has stopped, the underlying disease must be treated immediately. Different treatment methods are available depending on the different causes of black stools. For example, if an infection with Helicobacter pylori has developed an inflammation of the stomach, antibiotics are prescribed. So-called antacids (antacids) are often used in inflammation of the esophagus and gastric mucosal infections to prevent further irritation of the tissue by stomach acid.
