Can I use unlimited broken linseed?

  1. A limited and temporary use of 15 to 45 grams of broken linseed per day does not cause any problems. Still, it is better not to eat large amounts of flaxseed and not for too long. Linseed contains cyanogens, just like elderberries, bitter almonds and exotic tubers (such as cassava). The human body can convert cyanogens into the toxin cyanide (hydrocyanic acid).

Is cyanide dangerous?

  1. A high dose of cyanide can obstruct breathing and cause cardiac arrest. Poisoning can also occur from improper use of plant parts with cyanogens, such as peach leaves from which a tea is made.

How much linseed is safe?

  1. If you use linseed, it is advisable to do this in moderation and not continuously. 15 grams of crushed flaxseed is considered safe if not done for a long time. This equates to approximately 1 to 2 tablespoons. If you use up to 45 grams, it is better to divide this over 3 servings over the day, instead of all at once.

Better flax seed broken or ground?

  1. The amount of harmful compounds absorbed by the body increases the finer the linseed is ground. Therefore, rather use crushed linseed than ground flaxseed. The problems surrounding cyanide are much less of an issue with linseed oil. The cyanide (hydrocyanic acid) that occurs in linseed remains in the cake (pulp) when the oil is pressed. Any small residue left in the oil is not a safety concern. Reduce the amount of linseed if symptoms of blockage develop. Also make sure to drink enough in addition to the flaxseed.
