Do you eat more of larger portions?

  1. Yes, when we are offered food in larger portions, we tend to eat more of it. Both the size of a package and the size of the portion itself influence how much you eat. Larger crockery or cutlery also ensures that you eat more. Both children and adults tend to eat more with larger portions, but the effect is less severe in children than in adults.

The problem of more

  1. Larger portions will consume more calories faster than is good for you. This especially applies to extras: products that you don't need anyway, such as cookies, candy, soft drinks and other snacks. Rather opt for 'healthy' snacks.

What can you do yourself?

  1. Don't be tempted to buy or order more than you need. Only choose what you really need. Choose especially products from the Wheel of Five. Avoid oversized "XL" or "family packs". They may be comparatively cheaper, but you are more likely to eat more than is good for you. Use smaller crockery. You eat and drink less from smaller plates and smaller glasses. Use smaller cutlery. A normal spoon as a serving spoon helps you to scoop less food and with smaller knives, forks and spoons you eat less. Check the label for the portion size. The portion you eat or drink is not always stated on a package. For example: biscuits of which 3 are in a package. You tend to eat all 3 of them, while a serving is 1 biscuit.
