Early or premature ovulation or ovulation

  1. On average, the female cycle lasts about 28 days. This would mean that ovulation, also called ovulation, takes place around day 14. Just before ovulation, a woman is at its most fertile and is most likely to get pregnant. But it can also happen that ovulation takes place much earlier during a cycle. How is that possible? And what does it mean for the chances of pregnancy?

Ovulation

  1. About two weeks before a woman has her period, she ovulates. During ovulation, a mature egg is released that can be fertilized by a sperm cell if intercourse takes place. Some women feel very well when they have ovulated, other women do not notice it at all. There are a number of signs that could indicate ovulation:

No woman and no cycle is the same

  1. Although many women have a fairly regular cycle of about 28 days, there is also a group of women who (sometimes) deviate from this. Below an average of 28 days it should also be mentioned that a cycle of 25 days or 30 days is not abnormal, that is not a deviation from the regular cycle. You can only speak of an irregular cycle when someone has a fairly short one (for example 24 days) and the other a long cycle (for example 40 days). And even then all women with a regular cycle can sometimes have a longer or shorter cycle. Causes such as stress, fatigue, illness, tension, a great desire to have children, etc. can be the basis for this.

Early or too early ovulation ?!

  1. When is ovulation (too) early? This question is not very easy to answer. However, it can be stated that ovulation before day 10 after the first day of menstruation is on average seen as early. There are stories of women who feel ovulation around day 8, 9 or even day 7. Such stories are usually an exception to the rule and it is rare for women to ovulate so early every cycle. For women who would like to conceive, it can be a problem if they ovulate very early. There is a chance that the egg has not matured enough to be fertilized. Another and much more common 'problem' could be that a woman is simply not fully aware that her ovulation is occurring early in the cycle, so she is not having intercourse with her partner at the right time. Women who want to have children and suspect that ovulation is early can use an ovulation test to see when ovulation is taking place.

Early ovulation, short cycle ?!

  1. There is a good chance that a woman who has ovulated around day 10 will have her period around day 24.25. But it is also possible that a cycle is just a little longer, for example 29 days. There is then a shortened folicular phase and an extended luteal phase. The luteal phase is the time it takes for the uterus to prepare for a possible implantation of a fertilized egg. If the luteal phase is longer than average (for example 18 days instead of about 14), this does not have to affect the chance of getting pregnant at all. So it does not directly say anything about fertility. Women who wish to have children who are aware of their cycle progress can benefit from this. They can better estimate when they are expected to ovulate and can take into account that it will take longer for their periods.
