The epigastrium is the portion of the upper abdomen that is located below the ribs. The epigastric region includes the stomach, part of the liver, pancreas, and duodenum. Some patients experience epigastric pain (epigastralgia), in which they experience pain in the center of the upper abdomen, just below the rib cage. Depending on the cause, the mild to severe pain is accompanied by other complaints, such as diarrhea, heartburn and flatulence. The diagnosis and the preparation of a treatment plan are highly dependent on the cause and severity of the complaints. In the vast majority of patients, the pain is only mild and subsides spontaneously or with a few home remedies. Occasionally, however, medication or other medical treatment is needed to address the cause of epigastric pain.
