Epilepsy: symptoms and treatment epileptic seizure
-
Epilepsy is a collective term for disorders in which abnormal electrical activity in the brain causes spontaneous, recurring attacks of short-term consciousness change. In more than half of the cases there is idiopathic epilepsy, that is, no cause can be found. Epilepsy is quite common: 0.6% of the population has this condition. It often starts before the age of twentieth. Symptoms of epilepsy or a seizure may include temporary confusion; staring and losing contact with your surroundings; uncontrollable jerky movements of the arms and legs. Epilepsy is treated with drugs that prevent seizures. Other treatments are also possible if medication does not provide sufficient relief.

Childhood epilepsy and social problems later in life
-
Children with epilepsy can run into social problems later, even though the seizures (seizures) are under control. According to Anne Berg and colleagues from Chicago, seizures are important predictors, but they are not the only factor influencing social functioning. Learning disabilities and psychiatric disorders have a stronger impact (Pediatrics. 2016; 137 (4): e20153944).
