Infertility, ayurvedic infertility

  1. According to Ayurveda, infertility often has to do with a lack of specific nutrients or underdevelopment of the reproductive organs. Toning therapy for infertility due to disturbed vata consists of an anti-data and kapha-strengthening diet. Nourishing and fortifying foods used are milk and dairy products, meat, fish, nuts and fats such as ghee (clarified butter) and sesame oil. Recommended Ayurvedic women's tonics are Shatavari, Ashwagandha (Withania), Kumari (aloe gel), Saffron, Yasthi-Madhu (licorice root).

Ayurvedic view of pregnancy

  1. Mild nutritive tonics may be recommended during pregnancy. Herbs with strong effects, emmenagogues and strong laxatives are avoided. Tonics such as Kumari (aloe gel) and Haldi (yellow root) are recommended for the expectant mother. Nerve-strengthening agents such as basil and Brahmi are good against muscle spasms and pain from cramps and provide a relaxing effect. Shatavari strengthens the immune system of both the mother and the fetus, Shatavari is considered the best herb to balance the hormone system and strengthen the reproductive organs. Chyavanprash, a traditional tonic made from clarified butter (ghee) and Amalaki, is another way to boost the immune system. Raspberry leaves are good for nausea. Herbs not recommended during pregnancy include saffron and myrrh.
