Gallbladder polyp: symptoms, cause, treatment and prognosis

  1. Gallbladder polyp is a collective name for a number of different polyp-like (polyp-like) abnormalities. A polyp is a growth with a stalk. Cholesterol polyps are most common in the gallbladder. These are benign injuries or abnormalities. A small polyp in the gallbladder is often discovered by chance during a routine ultrasound or after having the gallbladder surgically removed (gallbladder resection). For smaller gallbladder polyps, regular ultrasound check-ups are sufficient. A polyp in the gallbladder that grows is then noticed during follow-up. Larger polyps will require removal of the gallbladder. More women than men have to deal with a gallbladder polyp. Most people are between 40 and 60 years old when they are diagnosed.

What is a gallbladder polyp?

  1. The gallbladder is a pear-shaped bag that serves as a temporary storage place for bile fluid, which is produced in the liver. Bile fluid is needed in the small intestine for the proper digestion of fats. Gallbladder polyp is a collective name for a number of different polyp-like abnormalities. Often these are cholesterol polyps. In addition, there are adenomas, inflammatory polyps and hyperplastic polyps. Cholesterol polyps are benign (benign) polyps of unknown origin, in which cholesterol is accumulated. With a gallbladder polyp <10 mm, a wait-and-see approach and regular ultrasound check-ups are sufficient. With a gallbladder polyp of ≥10 mm, a cholecystectomy is the policy. Cholecystectomy is an operation involving the gallbladder

Gallbladder polyp symptoms

  1. Gallbladder polyps may not cause any symptoms or complaints. Sometimes they cause biliary colic (abdominal pain from the gallbladder) caused by forceful squeezing of the gallbladder and bile duct. This kind of pain is often caused by gallstones
