Gallstones and healthy food

  1. Nuts, coffee, alcohol are not medicines, yet they can preventively and sometimes even curatively ensure that people suffer less from gallstones. There are probably other foods that can slow down or promote the production of gallstones.

Nuts and gallstones

  1. Nuts have a beneficial effect on cholesterol and lipoprotein levels in blood. The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in nuts help prevent the formation of cholesterol stones. The type of nut eaten does not matter, presumably because nuts are very similar in composition.

Legumes and gallstones

  1. Legumes contain a high content of sapogenins (soap substances), vegetable steroids that greatly increase the excretion of cholesterol with the bile. Perhaps for this reason legumes promote gallstone formation; on the other hand, legumes also have a high fiber content. There seems to be a link between legumes and gallstones: Pima Indians have gallstones exceptionally often and consume large amounts of beans. People predisposed to gallstones may do well to avoid overeating legumes.

Coffee and alcohol against gallstones

  1. Moderate alcohol consumption apparently helps in the prevention of gallstones. This protective effect can be attributed to lowering cholesterol in the bile, increasing the synthesis of bile acids, increasing the HDL cholesterol level and changing the type of bile acids in the enterohepatic cycle. However, too much alcohol consumption can lead to liver cirrhosis and (pigment) gallstones.
