Goji berries: health and side effects

  1. Gojij berries are one of the most important representatives of the superfood family. Superfood refers to a group of foods that, according to food gurus, have an extraordinary nutritional value because they contain high concentrations of antioxidants, vitamins or other nutrients. Goji berries are said, especially in Asia, to have strong health effects, such as the prevention of (cardiovascular) chronic diseases. Unfortunately, eating goji berries also has some harmful side effects, especially on blood clotting.

Atropine

  1. Another harmful substance in Goji berries is atropine, a substance found in most plants of the nightshade family and therefore also in Goji berries. Atropine is a toxic substance that when ingested can cause heart rhythm disturbances, dry mouth, reduced sweat production, dizziness and insomnia. In most cases, the concentration of atropine in goji berries will be so low that the consumer will not be bothered by it. However, measurements on berries from China and Thailand showed that the concentration of atropine can be very variable. In some cases the concentration was above the permitted dose and side effects could be experienced. Nevertheless, the number of reports of excessively high atropine levels remains limited and the risk is therefore estimated as low.
