Suitable for ... Material? … Fish, vegetables, rice and couscous. You can steam anything you can cook. Your steaming equipment consists of 2 parts: a base for water and a top with holes in the bottom where you put the food. This could be: a pan with a heat-resistant colander and lid, a steamer, a pan with a metal, wicker or bamboo steamer basket, a couscous pan or an electric steamer. Steaming in a special steam oven is also possible.
Step by step steaming (vegetables)
-
Steam vegetables over water, stock or water with herbs. You can also steam over a stew. This is often done with couscous. Care that there is enough water or stock in the bottom part of the pan, but make sure that it doesn't touch the top part Bring the water to a boil. Place the top part with the food on it and close with a closing lid. When steam comes out from under the lid, lower the heat. For an electric steamer or steam oven, see the instructions for use. The steaming time is slightly longer than the cooking time, count on 3 to 5 minutes more. View the cooking times of different vegetables. There are steam ovens that work with high pressure. This means products are ready on average in about a third of the normal time.

Useful tips for steaming
-
If you want to keep a lot of vitamins and minerals in your food, steaming is suitable. More is left in the food than when you cook it. Do not set the heat so high that the flames are surrounding the pan. It is the outside of the fire that is the hottest, so energy would be lost. When steaming it is important that the water continues to evaporate. If it doesn't steam, turn up the heat anyway. Do you make gravy or sauce? With the remaining moisture (with all its vitamins and minerals) that remains after steaming you can make gravy or sauce.
