How unhealthy is juice?
-
The advice is to drink as few sugary drinks as possible. For sugary drinks, think of lemonade, soda and juices such as orange juice, apple juice, grapefruit juice, but also self-squeezed juice.
How much sugar is in juice?
-
Juices contain just as much sugar as soft drinks. For example, apple juice and orange juice contain about 7 sugar cubes. If you drink juice, you unnoticeably get a lot of sugar, and therefore calories. That easily leads to obesity. Furthermore, people who drink sugary drinks have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Juice does contain some vitamins, but you get enough of them if you eat 2 pieces of fruit. In addition, the fibers in fruit usually have disappeared. In the video below, Astrid, Nutrition and Health expert at the Netherlands Nutrition Center, explains why fruit is better to eat than drink.
-
Does the advice also apply to freshly squeezed juice? Freshly squeezed juice contains just as much sugar as juice from a carton. And even if you make it yourself, you throw away fibers. The advice to drink as little juice as possible therefore also applies to freshly squeezed juice. It does not matter whether you squeeze with an ordinary press or a slow juicer.

What about fruit smoothies?
-
Pureed fruit, such as in a fruit smoothie, often contains the entire piece of fruit. It contains more fiber than juice. But drinking fruit does not fill you up as quickly as eating fruit. This is because you don't have to chew and you drink a fruit smoothie faster than if you eat the same amount of fruit. It is therefore better to eat fruit than drink. So a tip: are you making a smoothie? Grab a spoon.
