Is cottage cheese healthier than yogurt?
-
Good question! In this section, HealthNet will look for the answers to gnawing questions. This time: is cottage cheese healthier than yogurt?
-
There are many different types of yogurt that are healthy in some way. Bulgarian yogurt in particular contains many minerals, such as potassium, calcium and magnesium. But when it comes to protein content, quark takes the cake. This fresh cheese is nowadays increasingly used for breakfast or snack, sometimes flavored with fruit and nuts.
Vitamins
-
Besides proteins, curd cheese contains many vitamins, especially vitamins A, B2 and B12. Vitamin A is important for the resistance. The B vitamins ensure proper functioning of the nervous system and contribute to the energy supply. Vitamin B12 can only be found in animal products, such as dairy and meat, and plays a role in the formation of healthy red blood cells. Yogurt also contains these vitamins, but to a lesser extent.

Full, half or lean?
-
Nowadays all types of curd cheese are made from skimmed milk. Cream or another milk product is added to the quark in order to obtain the fat content determined in accordance with the Commodities Act. This means that full-fat quark is a lot richer in kilocalories, but does not necessarily contain more proteins. Semi-skimmed quark even consists of more protein than full-fat quark. However, the less fat the quark is, the less vitamin A it contains. This is the case with all dairy products. Vitamin A is in the fat that is lost when whole milk is processed into skimmed milk. For the other vitamins and minerals, it makes little difference whether you eat full or low-fat dairy. Kilocalories
-
Of yogurt and quark, quark generally contains the most kilocalories. If you prefer to consume less calories, choose a non-full version. Half full is a nice balance between the number of proteins, calories and healthy nutrients. The proteins in quark provide a feeling of satiety that lasts for a long time. So despite the amount of kilocalories in quark, it still fits very well in a healthy diet. Do you also have a good question? Send us an email.
