Is it smart to eat sugar free?

  1. 100% sugar-free eating is impossible. Fruits, dairy, grains and some vegetables also contain sugars. And you need these products and are part of a healthy diet. Even if you eat healthy, you get sugar and that is not bad at all. You don't have to avoid sugar and your body doesn't differentiate between sugars that are naturally present and added sugars.

What is sugar-free food?

The Health Council advises that anyone who wants to eat healthily gets 40 to 70% of their energy from carbohydrates. Low-carbohydrate diets, such as sugar-free diets, are often below 40%, which can lead to a lack of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Carbohydrates from the Wheel of Five

  1. Carbohydrates are best obtained from products from the Wheel of Five, such as wholemeal bread, wholemeal pasta, brown rice and legumes. With these products you get vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Good to eat less added sugar

  1. Still, you can do something to prevent too much added sugar. Added sugars are most commonly found in extras, such as soft drinks, candy, biscuits, pastries, sweetened dairy desserts and sauces.
