Europeans' early attempts to grow the fruit failed until they realized that the fruit needs a tropical climate to thrive. Portuguese and Spanish explorers introduced the pineapple to their Asian and African colonies. Pineapples were first grown in Hawaii in the 18th century. Hawaii is the only US state in which they are still grown. Other countries that belong in the trade of growing pineapple are: Thailand, the Philippines, China, Brazil and Mexico.
