Is raw milk healthy?

  1. There are people who like to drink their milk fresh from the cow, goat or another animal. Sometimes for the taste, sometimes for health reasons. Drinking raw milk is no healthier than pasteurized or heated milk. In fact, it is possible that it contains pathogenic bacteria. Whether raw milk is healthier than pasteurized milk from the supermarket has so far not been convincingly demonstrated. Raw milk is said to contain more antibodies, vitamins and good bacteria. They would strengthen the immune system. But the studies on the health effects of raw milk contradict each other. There is no conclusive scientific evidence that the extra substances in raw milk really do something for your health.

Raw milk risks

  1. What we do know for sure is that the risk of a food infection is higher if you drink milk raw. That says the European food authority EFSA in an article. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) also warns against this. Raw milk can contain various bacteria, such as campylobacter, listeria, salmonella and E. coli. The bacteria enter the milk during milking of the cow or during storage. You run the risk of a bacterial food infection, which can make you quite sick. Unfortunately, it is unclear how many cases of illness per year are involved. In any case, 27 outbreaks were reported in the EU between 2007 and 2013.

Vulnerable groups

  1. For some people it is extra important not to drink raw milk and not to eat products containing raw milk (such as raw milk cheese). The groups that should pay extra attention are: Pregnant Babies and young children Elderly People with a reduced resistance (for example due to illness) These people often have a reduced resistance and are more susceptible to foodborne infections. They don't always get better on their own after a food infection. A food infection therefore poses more danger for these risk groups. Food hygiene is a point of attention for everyone, but it is extra important for vulnerable groups. More tips for safe dairy management

Buy and store raw milk

  1. You can only get raw milk from the farmer. If you have bought raw milk, make sure you keep it refrigerated as soon as possible: in the fridge. Sometimes you can buy the milk from a milk machine on the farm. You can also order it on the internet. If the storage conditions in milk vending machines are not good, or if the companies behind the websites do not follow the correct transport and storage procedures, the chance that the bacteria present will grow into pathogenic amounts is greater.
