Is ready-to-drink ice tea a healthy tea?

A glass of ice-cold tea is nice and refreshing in the summer. And of course tea is very healthy. But does that also apply to the ready-made ice tea that you order on a terrace or buy in the supermarket?

Both black and green tea lower your blood pressure. Green tea also lowers LDL cholesterol. In addition, tea seems to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes. If you drink three cups of tea a day, you will already benefit from the health benefits of tea. Plus, tea is a lean thirst quencher, if you don't add a scoop of sugar to it.

Do all these benefits also apply to iced tea? It depends on. Ready-to-drink ice teas are sometimes made from real tea, but they usually taste much sweeter than regular black or green tea. That is - of course - because a lot of sugar has been added. And that, of course, negates the health benefits of iced tea. The amount of sugar in ready-to-drink iced tea differs per brand and type of iced tea. You can easily knock back two sugar cubes per glass unnoticed, unless you opt for a light version. If you want to keep an eye on your diet, first check the label for how many calories are in the iced tea in question.

It is very easy to make iced tea yourself. Better for your line and better for your wallet. Iced tea is best when it has been allowed to steep for a while and it must of course cool down. It is therefore useful to fasten it for example in the evening for the next day. The basic recipe simply consists of first making your favorite (strong) tea with a little more tea than usual. Let the water cool down for a while before adding the tea. Loose tea gives the best flavor. Then, after a few minutes of brewing, remove the tea and let your brew cool to room temperature. Then put your tea in the fridge until your drink is completely cold. Finally, add some ice cubes. You can also use uncooked tap water and let the tea steep in the fridge overnight. Use 8 to 15 grams of tea per liter of water. This â € ˜cold brewâ € ™ has a refined, subtle taste. Did you forget to prepare your iced tea or do you just feel like it now? Make very strong tea (with only half the water you would normally use) and then fill up the â € ˜missingâ € ™ water with ice cubes.

You can also add fruit or herbs to your brew. A slice of ginger, a branch of fresh mint, lemon balm, basil, slices of lemon, lime or orange, strawberries, berries, whatever you want.
