Is unprocessed food without packets and bags healthier?

  1. In general, opting for less processed food and cooking with fresh products is a good rule of thumb for a healthier and more sustainable diet. This will probably make you more conscious with food, you cook yourself with lots of vegetables, you omit salty, prepackaged soups and sauces and you eat less snacks and sweets in between.

Types of operation

  1. Edits cannot be completely avoided. Almost all the products we buy are (a little) processed in the way from land to the plate. For example, vegetables, fruit and legumes are preserved, frozen or dried, milk pasteurized, tap water filtered and nuts roasted. Cheese and bread are also processed products. Sometimes substances are added to products to make them last longer. This prevents food waste and people getting sick from spoiled food. If additives such as citric acid (E330) are added, this will not be at the expense of the nutritional value. If salt, sugar or palm fat are added, the product will be less healthy. Other operations are purely to please us as a consumer. By adding flavors, colors and smells we find products more attractive. Strict regulations in the Netherlands ensure that nothing is added to our food that the liver cannot break down or that accumulates or accumulates in our body. More information about E numbers

Ultra-processed foods

  1. There is also a category of products that are highly processed and contain a lot of calories, sugar, saturated fat and salt per serving, and very little vitamins, minerals and fiber. These are called ultra-processed foods. It is often conceived in such a way that we can easily eat too much of it: it is convenience food, you just about need to open the package to eat it.

Useful edits and additions

  1. Animal products such as dairy and cheese are naturally full of saturated fats. Through processing the natural unhealthy nutrients have been removed and more good properties remain. Think of low-fat or semi-skimmed yogurt and milk, or 30+ cheese with less salt. You will find these products in the Wheel of Five.

  1. Dealing with ultra-processed foods Avoiding all operations completely is therefore impossible and not necessary. But eating too many ultra-processed foods isn't healthy. If you eat according to the Wheel of Five, you eat a balanced diet, with not too many highly processed products and you don't get too much sugar, saturated fat and salt. Now and then a biscuit, ice cream or chips shouldn't be a problem.
