Most common form of skin cancer to be treated with ointment

  1. Certain forms of basal cell carcinoma can be treated with anti-inflammatory ointment instead of surgery. This is evident from the doctoral research by Tjinta Brinkhuizen of Maastricht UMC +.

  1. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of skin cancer. One in five Dutch people will have to deal with it during his or her life. Because surgery for this skin cell proliferation is still the most effective form of treatment, most basal cell carcinomas are still surgically removed.

Suppress ignition

  1. Brinkhuizen looked at epigenetic changes (genetic transfer that is not linked to the DNA building block sequence) in basal cell carcinomas. It turned out that the epigenetic changes in the basal cell carcinoma lead to inflammation that promotes growth of the cancer cells. By suppressing the inflammation with an anti-inflammatory gel (diclofenac), the basal cell carcinoma can be treated successfully. "From our research results we can conclude that the treatment with diclofenac gel has good results and clearly produces less skin damage", says PhD student Brinkhuizen.

Advantages of non-surgical treatment

  1. Non-operative treatment of basal cell carcinomas with an ointment has several advantages. It provides better cosmetic results and higher patient satisfaction. In addition, the treatment takes less time and less money. Understanding the mechanism by which this tumor develops provides direction for the development of new, non-operative but targeted forms of treatment. Targeted treatments are the future in cancer therapy because they target specific properties of the cancer cells. As a result, the healthy cells are less damaged. Tjinta Brinkhuizen obtained her PhD on Friday, June 24, 2016 at Maastricht University.
