New advice Nutrition Center for pregnant women
-
Pregnant women should avoid eating predatory fish at all, such as swordfish, zander, shark, king mackerel, marlin and tuna. Canned fish is also not safe to eat. In addition, cheese made from raw milk is not recommended. Such are the new recommendations for pregnant women from the Netherlands Nutrition Center in its adjusted nutritional advice.

A striking change is the canned fish. According to the Nutrition Center, it was previously thought that there was less mercury in canned tuna than fresh tuna. However, RIVM and RIKILT have indicated that there is no difference. In addition, the NVWA has indicated that hard cheeses made from raw milk can also contain pathogens. 'Our advice is therefore to avoid both hard and soft cheese made from raw milk. The cheese can be eaten when heated in a dish. '

Predatory fish have already appeared in the list of fish species that pregnant women should not eat. 'A few weeks ago, the RIVM released a new report with these new insights,' says nutrition expert Patricia Schutte of the Netherlands Nutrition Center. Pregnant women are advised to eat fish once a week. 'You can eat salmon and sardines. These are types of fish with healthy fats. ' There is a long list of products that you should not eat during pregnancy, such as liver, raw meat, raw eggs, bean sprouts, dried and fermented meats and pâté. 'You don't want to take any risks in that short period.' This also applies to heating raw products such as cheeses or eggs. 'You don't have to panic immediately if you have received it once when you are pregnant,' says Schutte. "But it is better not to give the listeria bacteria a chance by setting the refrigerator to 4 degrees Celsius and heating meals properly."
