Pink urine: symptoms, cause and treatment of red urine

Do you notice pink urine? Red or pink urine color is often associated with blood in the urine (haematuria), but most cases can be attributed to other factors such as food and drink dyes that discolor the urine. Normally, urine is clear and light yellow to bright yellow in color. In most cases, hematuria will not discolor the urine to the extent that it will be visibly red or pink. The color depends on the amount of blood and whether the blood is 'old' or 'fresh'. In severe cases where there is significant blood loss in the lower urinary tract, the urine may have a red to pink hue. This is called macroscopic; blood in the urine is visible to the naked eye. Pain is also not a reliable indication of whether red urine or pink urine is due to haematuria, as there are many causes of haematuria without further symptoms due to serious illnesses such as bladder cancer.
