Pyoderma gangrenosum: ulcers on the skin that get bigger

  1. With pyoderma gangrenosum you suffer from ulcers on the skin that gradually enlarge. Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare condition in which large, painful sores (ulcers) develop on the skin, usually on your legs, and slowly enlarge. The ulcers develop spontaneously or after damage to the skin. It is not known exactly what causes pyoderma gangrenosum, but it turns out to be a disorder of the immune system. People with certain underlying conditions, such as inflammatory bowel disease or rheumatoid arthritis, have a greater risk of developing pyoderma gangraenosum. So it is not caused by a bacterial infection. The sores that occur with pyoderma gangraenosum can develop quickly. They usually respond well to treatment, often leaving scars and recurrence is not excluded.

Outlook

  1. Once treatment has started, recovery will begin. However, it may take months to years for full recovery to occur. This is an intense experience. In the meantime, the disease can flare up. Eventually the sores and wounds will heal completely, sometimes leaving scars. This depends on the size and depth of the sores. The course of the treatment varies. You can be affected by pyoderma gangrenosum once, but it also happens that with every (minor) skin damage you will again suffer from pyoderma gangrenosum ulcers. But because you then know what you have, you can intervene early and stop the formation of ulcers. It is also possible for the ulcers to come back spontaneously, sometimes requiring continuous systemic treatment with prednisone to prevent the ulcers from coming back. That is very stressful.
