Red rice, natural cholesterol lowering agent

  1. We are reminded every day that we should not let our cholesterol levels rise too high. This risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease is actually given too much attention compared to other risk factors such as an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar.

Ang poop, a traditional food

  1. For many centuries, traditional Chinese cuisine has used "Red Yeast Rice" or "Ang kak" or fermented red rice. This seasoning and natural coloring agent is created by allowing rice to ferment by the yeast Monascus purpureus, which produces a red-colored rice grain. In many Asian countries, fermented red rice is used to flavor fish dishes, soy preparations, sauces, pickled vegetables, etc., and to make rice wine. The intake of red fermented rice in the Asian diet therefore easily reaches 14 to 55 g / day. Since fermented rice has long been known in Chinese traditional medicine as a stimulant for blood circulation, strengthening the heart and providing "healthy blood," it has been studied in clinical studies.

Lower cholesterol and red rice

  1. Several clinical studies, in which people with an elevated cholesterol level took fermented red rice, were able to show a clear cholesterol-lowering and tri-glyceride-lowering effect. In a clinical study, after 8 weeks, a clear decrease in total cholesterol levels was seen by 16 to 23%, of the "bad" LDL cholesterol by 21 to 31% and of the triglycerides by 24.5 to 34%.

Food and cholesterol

  1. Nutritionally, a lot can be done to lower cholesterol levels. First, eat more vegetables, fruits and whole grains, because the fiber in them reduces the absorption of cholesterol in the gut. Furthermore, add more nuts (especially almonds and hazelnuts), seeds (especially sesame seeds and flax seeds), onions, garlic and cabbage on the menu. Avoid all white flour products (they no longer have the fiber) and leave as much sugar as possible, because the latter has recently been shown to increase 'bad' LDL cholesterol and lower 'good' HDL cholesterol.
