Researchers warn against turmeric

  1. Many breast cancer patients believe that turmeric can fight cancer. Erasmus MC researchers are now warning about the spice after a new study. Turmeric affects the effect of a commonly used cancer drug.

  1. Turmeric has been seen as a kind of panacea for years. The spice is said to have a medicinal effect on cancer. Curcumin, the active substance from turmeric, is said to be able to clean up cancer cells. Evidence for this was found in animal studies. As a result, many breast cancer patients sprinkle a lot of turmeric over their food, or swallow capsules containing this yellow powder. "Many patients reason: if you can also eat it in a curry, it won't hurt. If it also helps against cancer, that's a bonus. But we will come back. Don't do it," warns doctor- researcher Koen Hussaarts from Erasmus MC.

Hormone-sensitive breast cancer

  1. Over the past two years, Hussaarts conducted research among sixteen women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer. When these patients combined their cancer medicines with a capsule containing turmeric three times a day, the medication was absorbed less well into the blood. “And that is dangerous. If these women don't get enough medication, the tumor can start to grow again, ”he explains.

Hormone inhibitors

  1. His warning applies to breast cancer patients with tumors that are sensitive to hormones. In the Netherlands, about fourteen thousand women suffer from this. On average, they still take hormone inhibitors for up to five years after their hospital treatment. These pills - best known as Tamoxifen - are supposed to stop any remaining cancer cells in the body from growing or spreading.
