Because a good yoga mat must provide sufficient support and be stiff enough for certain yoga postures. And for a simple mat that is fine. When standing in the 'downward facing dog' for a long time, somewhere halfway through the yoga training, I notice that my - slightly sweaty - hands start to slide a bit, but otherwise the support and stiffness are fine. Especially with planks - not necessarily a yoga exercise, but one that I enjoy doing - and push ups gives the mat good grip and support. Lying on the mat is very comfortable, firm and soft at the same time. Both on your stomach and on the back. Lotus Design indicates that the mat can take a beating and this is certainly true, but after use, prints are visible in the mat that remain for a while. Eventually they disappear again. It is also nice that the mat stays flat and does not curl up.
