Sleeping: which is better, window open or closed?
-
If there is moth left in the bedroom, it is often about the temperature. Because you will see: he wants the window closed, while you can sleep alone in the fresh air of an open window. What is better?
-
An open window is nice because of the fresh air. Many people sleep well, especially in the summer. Other people do not want to be 'on the draft', find an open window too cold or cannot sleep with the window open because of outside noise. Whether you are 'team open' or 'team closed', there is one thing that cannot be disputed: good ventilation is really necessary in the bedroom. Poor ventilation in the house causes health problems such as respiratory problems, headaches and allergies. For people with respiratory complaints, the removal of moisture is especially important. Dust mites and fungi do not thrive in dry air. It is a myth that it is enough to open the window regularly. The fresh air that comes in has disappeared after half an hour. Airing it now and then is therefore not enough. You ventilate well 24 hours a day. So always the grids open or the (hinged) windows ajar. For those who have it: always have the mechanical ventilation system on.
We are exhaling carbon dioxide
-
Good ventilation is extra important for the bedroom because bedrooms are usually not very large spaces. And during our sleep we exhale carbon dioxide. Without proper ventilation, the carbon dioxide content in the bedroom quickly increases at night. Fortunately, that is not bad for your health, but it is bad for your sleep. Research by the University of Eindhoven shows that you sleep deeper and wake up less often when the carbon dioxide levels in the air are low. Danish research once again shows that a low carbon dioxide score at night improves concentration during the day. Too little oxygen in your bedroom can also cause headaches. All good reasons to open that window a bit more often. Still, proponents of a closed window also have a point: you not only increase the risk of noise nuisance, but also of burglary by sleeping with the window open. And of course, especially in autumn and winter, heat is also lost when you have the window open. The best temperature in the bedroom is 16-18 degrees. When it is very hot in the bedroom, you sleep very restless and sweat. If it is too cold in the bedroom, your body is constantly correcting the body temperature and as a result you sleep restlessly.
