Smelly scalp: what to do?

  1. Some people suffer from a stinky scalp and hair. There is even a name for it in English: Smelly Hair Syndrome. The specific air is described in different ways. Examples are sour milk, wet dog, a jacket that has not been hung out to dry or vomit. Sometimes the scent is so strong that others can smell it too. Some can smell it after just washing their hair, for others it starts smelling after a few days. What causes the problem and what can you do about it?

Greasy scalp

  1. The characteristic, sour smell is usually triggered by excessive oil production from the scalp. The air comes from the millions of bacteria that live on your scalp. Everyone has these bacteria on their scalp and they are not bad. The excessive fat production gives the bacteria the food they use to grow and divide considerably, making such air stronger. In addition, greasy hair is more likely to absorb outside odors, such as smoke, cooking smells and other strong odors.

Solution

  1. A simple solution is to wash your hair often with a mild and non-irritating shampoo. This way your scalp remains clean, but you do not dry out the scalp. If you dry out the scalp, it produces even more fat as a counter-reaction! Also do not use conditioner on the hair roots, as that can make it greasy too.

Other causes

  1. In worse cases, you may have a fungus in your hair that causes the sour smell. Warm, humid conditions are perfect for the fungus to grow in. Then washing alone will no longer help, or even make it worse, so you may be able to smell the sourish air from the moment you step out of the shower. You have fungi that are only on the hair (ectothrix fungi), but you also have fungi that grow into the hair shaft (endothrix fungi). The fungi can come from another human, animals or the soil.
