Superfood: kale

  1. With superfoods you often think of all kinds of exotic fruits, special seeds or strange nutritional supplements such as algae. However, there are also various superfoods that are simply grown on Dutch soil, and can often already be found in our daily diet. A very nutritious superfood from Dutch soil is kale. This vegetable is therefore becoming increasingly popular nowadays. This is not surprising, given the exceptional richness of nutrients, the great health benefits and of course the delicious taste.

The vegetable

  1. Kale is one of the healthiest vegetables in the world. The vegetable comes from a leafy crop and belongs to the Brassica family, which also includes vegetables such as other types of cabbage, broccoli and Brussels sprouts. It is a typical winter vegetable. It is therefore eaten in the winter in the Netherlands, in the traditional stew. Two types of kale can be distinguished: bush kale and dwarf kale. Again, different varieties can be distinguished, often with different types of leaf curls. The color can also differ, from dark green to deep red.

Nutritional value

  1. Everyone knows that eating natural, unprocessed vegetables is very good for your health. However, adding kale to the daily diet can have additional health benefits. But why is that so? This is because kale contains high amounts of certain vitamins and minerals that are good for health.

Kale in your daily diet

  1. Kale is of course usually eaten with dinner. Of course, this often in the well-known farm stew. However, there are other ways to add kale to your daily diet as well. When you vary this, eating it does not become boring, and you do a lot of good for your health. You can recognize the freshest kale by its sturdy leaves with a deep color and a hard grain. The smaller leaves will be softer and milder in taste. Kale is best stored in the refrigerator, unwashed in an airtight bag. This way you can keep this vegetable for about 5 days.
