Three deaths and a miscarriage from listeria contamination of meat products

  1. In the past two years, three people have died and a woman has miscarried from a listeria contamination in processed meats. This is reported by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

  1. A total of 20 people became ill after being infected with Listeria through meat products. The RIVM assumes that these came from meat products supplier Offerman in Aalsmeer. It was announced on Thursday evening that deli meats have been widely recalled due to the possibility that they are infected with the listeria bacteria.

Dangerous

  1. Listeria bacteria can occur in food, especially raw food and products that have been left in the refrigerator for a long time. Healthy people usually have no or mild symptoms, which resemble flu or stomach flu. Infection can be dangerous for young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Some of these patients may die. Pregnant women do not have to become ill from a listeria infection themselves, but they do run the risk of a miscarriage, premature birth or serious illness of the child. About 80 infections are reported to the RIVM every year. The RIVM has discovered this week through a new research method that three deaths have been caused by the bacterium. The institute had received contaminated samples from the factory in Aalsmeer from the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). This week it was possible to determine which type of listeria bacteria caused the infection with the new method. The RIVM was able to link that infection to twenty cases of illness and three deaths.

Additional checks

  1. Earlier it was known to the NVWA that something was wrong with Offerman. In recent months, additional checks have been carried out at the company. Offerman has taken extra measures, but that has not helped enough. "For example, they took extra hygiene measures for the production line, took extra samples. But that had insufficient effect," says a spokesman for the NVWA. All Offerman pre-packaged meat products that were packaged and cut at the factory in Alsmeer are now being recalled. These ended up at Aldi, Bidfood, Jumbo, Sligro and Versunie, among others. The production location in Aalsmeer. It concerns meat products such as pre-packaged chicken fillet, ham and bacon. The recall includes processed meats such as prepackaged chicken fillet, ham and bacon. Jumbo is recalling 135 different meat products. Sligro has 168 packed articles and Aldi is recalling four products.
