Toxoplasmosis: Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Cause

  1. Toxoplasmosis is an infectious disease that is transmitted from animals to humans via parasites. The infection can occur not only in humans, but also in birds and mammals, such as cats and dogs. People with a weak immune system due to, for example, AIDS or chemotherapy are more susceptible to toxoplasmosis.

Symptoms

  1. Tired / fussy Fever Pain muscle strain Headache Swollen and painful glands

Symptoms that can occur in people with a weakened immune system and babies

  1. Confusion / convulsions (with brain damage) Blurred vision (due to eye damage)

Diagnosis and Treatment

  1. The doctor can conclude on the basis of complaints and physical examination that a patient has toxoplasmosis. Blood tests can also provide a definite answer. This shows any antibodies that the body produces against the parasite. In people in good health, toxoplasmosis disappears by itself. People with a weakened immune system, children, babies and pregnant women are usually treated with medicines such as sulfonamides, clindamycin and trimethoprim. If weakened people are not treated, they can die. Babies can become disabled.

How do you prevent toxoplasmosis?

  1. Reduce the risk of acquiring toxoplasmosis by avoiding raw or undercooked meat and unwashed fruits and vegetables. Do not touch animal feces. Wear latex gloves when changing the litter box and dispose of it in the trash immediately afterwards. Then wash your hands. Pregnant women should leave the changing of the litter box to someone else. Also work with latex gloves in the garden when cats do their business there. Wash a knife used to cut meat thoroughly with hot water and soap.
