Which is better: sugar or sweetener?
-
Sugar is no better or worse than sweetener. Normal use of sugar is harmless. The same applies to (products with) sweeteners. Adults, children and diabetics can use sugar and sweeteners. For people who have to watch their weight and for diabetics, it can be useful to choose products in which sugar has been replaced by sweetener. There are hardly any calories in it.
Too much sugar
-
Excessive use of sugar, for example in the form of soft drinks, sweets or cookies, can cause complaints in the short term. Think of gastrointestinal complaints or fatigue. Moreover, with sugar-rich products you quickly consume a lot of calories, of which you can gain weight in the long run. Therefore, follow a varied and healthy diet.
Intensive sweeteners
-
Intensive sweeteners are fifty to five hundred times sweeter than sugar and provide little or no energy. These sweeteners are used in sweeteners and sweeteners (tablets, liquid or powder form), diet soda and light desserts. These products can be used daily with normal amounts.

Extensive sweeteners
-
Extensive sweeteners (polyols) are slightly less or just as sweet as sugar. Most provide energy, but less than sugar. Polyols are widely used in products for diabetics. Using larger amounts of products containing polyols at one time can cause gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea. That's why products containing polyols have the warning “overuse can have a laxative effect”.
