Your baby's development; 40 weeks pregnant

  1. At 40 weeks your baby is completely full term. Many pregnant women cannot wait to 'finally' hold their baby in their arms. The home stretch is often experienced as tough. On average, a baby weighs between 3000 and 4000 grams in week 40, and is about 50 - 56 centimeters long. Read all about the 40th week of pregnancy in this article.

Overtime, now what ?!

  1. For clarity; Being 40 weeks pregnant does not immediately mean that you will run out of time. Only from 41 weeks can we really speak of running out of time. The midwife or gynecologist can use an internal examination to determine whether something is already 'going' in your stomach. The cervix has to ripen before the baby can be born. This 'ripening' is sometimes triggered by the contraction of the uterus (hard bellies or pre-contractions), but it can also happen overnight. When the cervix has already expired, and therefore there is a very small opening, the midwife or gynecologist can choose to 'strip'. By stripping, the delivery can be a little started, but it does not always have an effect. There are other 'remedies' that could induce contractions. Read about it here

You in the fortieth week

  1. The delivery can start at any time! Rumbling in your stomach, ranging from light, hard bellies to painful stitches in the bottom of your stomach, can be a precursor to labor. You will probably recognize a real contraction immediately. While waiting for your baby can be emotionally long, it may also be comforting to know that you have already been pregnant for 40 weeks! Remember that the beginning of your pregnancy started as a tiny fetus, and now you have a 'real', fully grown baby in your womb. To make the wait bearable, try to find enough distraction. A walk, drinking coffee with friends or watching a movie can give you the necessary distraction.
