Dutch onion soup with steam bars
A budget soup of onions, served with steam bars.

Cut the onion into rings. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion rings. Sprinkle with the flour, sugar and cinnamon and cook for 1 more minute.

Pour in the stock and bring the soup to the boil. Leave to simmer for 15 minutes and season the soup with salt and pepper.

Remove the bread crusts. Cover half of the slices of bread with the cheese. Divide the ham over it and cover with the rest of the bread.

Cut each double cut into 2 bars. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the toasted bread on both sides until golden brown and crispy.

Scoop the onion soup into the bowls, sprinkle with the cheese and add the toasted bread.
