Cut the spareribs into 3 equal pieces and put into a large pan.

Crush the garlic and add with the 5 spice powder and the salt.

Add so much water that the ribs are almost covered, bring to the boil and cook in a low heat for 1 hour with the lid on the pan.

Take the ribs out of the pan. Drain well and cool slightly.

Heat the oven grill.

Brush the ribs around with the char siu sauce and place on a rack above a baking tray.

Roast the ribs for about 20 minutes in the oven, halfway through.
