A grapefruit counts for two

  1. The grapefruit is a large, round citrus fruit with a diameter of 10 to 17 centimeters. Under the thick skin there are juicy segments with a fresh tart taste. Did you know that a grapefruit counts as two servings of fruit? Why it is such a healthy fruit.

  1. The grapefruit is probably the result of a cross between an orange and a grapefruit. The name refers to the growth habit of the grapefruit plant. Grape is the English word for grape and also grapefruits grow together in clusters, just like grapes.

Red = sweet

  1. There are different types, including the white and the red variety. White grapefruits have a yellow skin. Underneath is light yellow to white flesh with a fresh, somewhat bitter taste. Red grapefruits are pink to red on the inside and taste less bitter. The redder, the sweeter!

Grapefruit counts for two

  1. Like all types of fruit, grapefruits are very healthy. They consist largely of water and are also rich in fiber, potassium and vitamin C. Thanks to their generous size, the grapefruit counts for two: if you eat one grapefruit, you already have your two servings of fruit for the day.

Fat burner?

  1. A survey by the Netherlands Nutrition Center shows that more than 58 percent of the Dutch believe that grapefruit juice (or lemon juice) helps to break down fat. Unfortunately, that is really a myth. Nevertheless, a grapefruit is a great snack if you want to keep an eye on your diet. 100 grams of grapefruit contain 37 kilocalories.

Do not combine with medication

  1. Grapefruit is not a suitable fruit for everyone. If you use medication, you have to pay attention. Substances in the grapefruit can slow the breakdown of some drugs. The medicine will then work less well, or the risk of side effects is greater. With certain medicines, you should therefore not eat too much or not at all grapefruits or drink their juice. You can find out on Apotheek.nl whether you can combine your medication with grapefruit.

Buying, storing and cooking Choose grapefruits that are heavy to the touch, which are the juiciest. The skin should not feel rough, as this indicates dry pulp segments. Then keep the fruits in the fruit bowl or in a cool place, preferably not in the refrigerator. They last up to three weeks. You can peel a grapefruit like an orange and eat it like that, but the skin can be a bit stiff. If you don't like that, cut the segments away from between the membranes. Or halve the grapefruit and spoon it out. A slice of grapefruit in a glass of water gives your water a subtle fresh taste. Or make this fresh fruit water with a bite. The fruit also works well in salads (such as this 'carpaccio') and desserts.
