Burning feet

  1. Many people suffer from burning and painful feet. This can be caused by a variety of conditions or conditions.

  1. Nerve damage, also called neuropathy, is the cause of burning feet in the majority of patients. Often it is a burning sensation in combination with other complaints. Such as: a feeling of pinpricks or electric shocks, the feeling of 'walking on cotton wool', ticklish skin and no longer feeling well from heat and cold. Besides diabetes, alcohol abuse is the most common cause of neuropathy in the legs.

Other causes and illnesses of which burning feet is a symptom are:

  1. Uremia, a chronic kidney disease Thin fiber neuropathy, a form of polyneuropathy Vitamin deficiency (vitamin B12 and sometimes vitamin B6) Hypothyroidism, a deficiency of thyroid hormones Lyme disease HIV / AIDS Amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP) Side effects of certain drugs Erythromelalgia, a rare blood flow disorder Vasculitis, inflammation of the blood vessels Heavy metal poisoning (lead, mercury, arsenic) Sarcoidosis, a disease in which inflammation spontaneously develops in various organs and tissues of the body Guillain-Barré Syndrome, a rare paralysis disease Edema, fluid retention Hypertension, high blood pressure Tarsal tunnel syndrome, a tightness of a nerve to the big toe In addition to neuropathy, infections and inflammation can also lead to a burning sensation. The most common of these is swimmers' eczema, an infection of the skin caused by fungi. With vascular disease in the legs (peripheral vascular disease) or shop window legs, you can also suffer from burning feet. The poor blood circulation causes pain, tingling and burning, especially when walking.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

  1. There are people who experience a burning sensation in their feet for weeks and some even months after gastric bypass surgery. After a gastric bypass, the stomach no longer absorbs vitamin B12 properly. A vitamin B12 deficiency can cause burning feet.

Diagnosis

  1. In most people the probable cause will be quickly determined. Unfortunately, there are also patients for whom a diagnosis is not so easy to make. Further research is then necessary to discover why someone has burning feet. In many cases, a doctor will do a nerve conduction exam or electromyography, or EMG. The latter examines the activity in the muscles. A needle is inserted into a muscle through the skin. The needle records the electrical activity in the muscle as the patient relaxes and then contracts the muscle. When a healthy muscle is at rest, no electrical activity takes place. When the muscle contracts, electrical activity is registered. Sometimes, blood, urine and / or spinal fluid testing may also be suggested to help make a diagnosis. For example, a simple blood test can show whether someone has a vitamin deficiency.

Treatment

  1. The treatment of burning feet is highly dependent on the cause. When neuropathy is involved, the treatment is aimed at reducing the complaints. The treatment must also ensure that the complaints do not get worse as quickly. Nerve damage cannot be cured.

Diabetic neuropathy

  1. For people with diabetic neuropathy it is important that the blood sugar level is not too high or too low. A doctor will prescribe blood sugar lowering tablets, insulin injections or in some cases an insulin pump.
