Can you eat ice cream while pregnant?

  1. Ice cream is a nice cold treat on a hot day. Especially when you are pregnant, you can enjoy it even more. But can you actually have all kinds of ice cream when you are pregnant? If you check Google, you will come across many different advice. What is true and how is it really?

  1. It is true that until a number of years pregnant women were advised not to take soft ice cream, because it would increase the risk of a foodborne infection. However, RIVM revised that advice at the end of 2016. Research showed that this no longer posed any risk. And that is why soft ice cream has been removed from the list of risk products for pregnant women. But not all websites keep track of this kind of changed advice and change the texts. That is why you can still find the old advice on various sites. Nice and confusing! So if you are pregnant, you can safely enjoy a soft ice cream. Also water ice, sorbet, ice cream and scoop ice, by the way.

Why would special soft serve ice cream be a problem?

  1. Soft ice cream is made from pasteurized milk and is therefore in principle safe to eat when you are pregnant. It is true that the machines must be clean and the ice maker must work hygienically. Otherwise, leftovers of milk may remain in the machines, which may contain the listeria bacteria. Listeria bacteria also love leftovers of soft ice cream that have been at room temperature for a while. The Netherlands has special regulations for hygiene and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority also checks. In principle, the prevention of post-contamination is carefully checked.

Ice cream abroad

  1. The hygiene of scoop and soft ice cream abroad can be more questionable. You can imagine that freezers and coolers are not constantly cold enough. Certainly also at stalls on the street. And not everywhere is hygienic. Therefore avoid ice cream or soft ice cream that has been stored for a long time in those countries. Preferably join the queue of a busy ice cream parlor. That is safer than buying ice cream from that nice cart that has been standing on a sunny square for hours. If you do not trust hygiene, do not take soft ice cream or scoop ice cream. A prepackaged ice cream is a safe choice.

Ice cream with alcohol

  1. There is one more category of ice to watch out for while pregnant. That's ice cream with alcohol. In GinTonic ice cream or that refreshing limoncello ice cream, the alcohol percentage can rise to 5-6 percent. It is therefore better not to take ice cream with alcohol. The effect of alcohol and the negative effect on your baby is not reduced by processing it in ice. Not even in prepackaged ice. The advice is not to use alcohol at all when you are pregnant (and if you want to become pregnant).
