Can you freeze food twice?

  1. It is better not to freeze and thaw leftover meal that you have previously frozen and reheated to eat. This way you have a greater chance of getting sick from a food infection. Sometimes you have leftovers from a meal, accidentally or on purpose. A leftover lasagna or pasta, a curry or an oven dish, for example. You can freeze such leftovers to eat later, that's safe. But if you still have some left over from the warmed-up leftover, you better throw it away. The chance that this will make you sick is a lot higher with a second heat.

Food infection risk

  1. Defrosting food, heating it up, leaving it on the table or counter, allowing it to cool down and freeze it again: that causes considerable temperature fluctuations in your food. Bacteria respond to these fluctuations. For example, they grow fast at room temperature. The more bacteria on and in your food, the greater the chance that it will contain harmful bacteria. They can make you seriously ill, we call that a food infection.

Keep leftovers

  1. Do you have leftovers from a previously frozen meal? Then keep it well covered in the refrigerator and eat it the next day. If you like to freeze food for a later moment, keep it in smaller portions. Then you can defrost exactly what you need. The chance that you still have something left is much smaller.

Safe defrosting

  1. If you thaw leftovers properly, harmful bacteria have less chance. Safe thawing can be done by placing the leftovers in the fridge the night before, or by thawing them in the microwave. Heat thawed products well and eat them immediately. It is better not to let it thaw on the counter, at room temperature pathogenic bacteria can quickly grow.

Smart freezing

  1. Do you have leftovers from a meal? Let it cool down as quickly as possible in a pan or container with cold water. Then put them in the freezer, where they can be kept for another 3 months. Tip: put a date on it so that you know later when you frozen it. Also mention what you have frozen, because once frozen, you may not recognize the dish.

  1. Meat from the freezer Meat such as minced meat or chicken from the freezer can be used perfectly to prepare a meal. The heating kills any harmful bacteria present. If you have any leftovers from this prepared meal, you can safely freeze it for later use.
