Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS): hypermobility, stretchy skin

  1. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is the name for a group of hereditary connective tissue disorders. The connective tissue is less firm, joints are more mobile (hypermobility) and can dislocate more quickly. The muscles may be weak, someone with EDS is more prone to bruising, the skin is hyper-elastic (stretchy) and feels like velvet. Certain types of EDS can rupture blood vessels and organs, leading to bleeding in the body. EDS affects about one in five thousand people.

Different names for the syndrome

  1. Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Ehlers-Danlos syndrome Ehlers-Danlos syndrome EDS

Diagnosis EDS

  1. If the GP suspects EDS, it is good to ask for a referral to a clinical geneticist

Precepts

  1. Try to avoid injuries: no sharp objects in the house, no contact sports. Wear knee socks and shin guards underneath if necessary. If you smoke, quit smoking. Discuss with the physiotherapist what exercises you should do at home. Maybe orthopedic shoes. If you know you have EDS, always report it to a doctor. An assessment can then be made as to whether an operation, examination or action is really necessary. Always report it when medication is prescribed.

Possible complications EDS

  1. Due to hypermobility, instability can occur. Also due to hypermobility: osteoarthritis, osteoporosis. Skeletal abnormalities may develop: scoliosis, kyphosis. As for the feet: pes equinovarus (club foot), pes planus (flat foot), hallux valgus (deviation of the big toe). Aneurysm: a widening in part of the vasculature (especially in the vascular type). Cardiological complications: cardiac arrhythmias, mitral valve prolapse. Surgical complications can arise. Respiratory (breathing) complications. Chronic pain and chronic fatigue can be complications. Problems during pregnancy. Eye problems. Dental problems.

Prognosis, the course EDS

  1. The course is unpredictable, but usually the symptoms increase slowly. Life expectancy does not differ from people who do not suffer from EDS. This is somewhat different for the vessel type, the danger lies in rupture (tearing) of arteries. Good guidance for persons with EDS is important.
